World Book Day

St Joseph’s Primary School Celebrates World Book Day with Creative Dress-Up

In a celebration of literacy and imagination, St Joseph’s Primary School (Outstanding 2023 Ofsted Rating) marked World Book Day with a unique twist this year. Instead of donning the costumes of their favourite characters, children embraced the power of words by dressing up as literary terms, bringing language to life in vibrant and imaginative ways.

The halls of St Joseph’s were alive with children transformed into colourful walking embodiments of words, such as quirky, affluent, fragile, somnolent and float, to name but a few. From "sparkling" fairies to "mischievous" foxes, the costumes were as diverse as the words they represented. All this sparked curiosity, conversation and excitement throughout the school with Billy (Year 3), who came as a “playful” pup, saying it was “the most incredible World Book Day ever”.

Executive Headteacher, Miss Clare Mcflynn, expressed her delight at the creativity displayed by the children, stating, "World Book Day is a wonderful opportunity for our children to celebrate the joy of reading and language. It was a truly inspiring day”.

St Joseph’s also hosted a Scholastic Book Fair giving the children an opportunity to use their World Book Day £1 book token to either get a £1 off a book of their choice or swap it for one of the especially published World Book Day books.

Tahlia (Diamond Class) lucky winner of book cover competition.

Cain (Indigo Class) lucky winner of quiz..

As the day ended, children gathered for a special assembly where they joined in with a quiz and shared their creative alternative book covers. Prizes of book vouchers for the book fair were awarded to the winners of the quiz. It was a fitting conclusion to a day filled with creativity, laughter, and a shared love of books.

World Book Day

World Book Day at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Highgate was celebrated in style on Thursday 7th March with both children and teachers coming to school in wonderful book character costumes

To encourage imagination and the fun of reading children and teachers came to school dressed as their favourite book characters. The children were greeted in the morning by Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, otherwise known as Michal, the Premises Manager, the Senior Leadership and Administrative Team!!

The children had an opportunity to parade their costumes in a whole-school assembly. It was truly amazing to see such a display of the children’s creativity with many of the costumes home-made. We had characters from such celebrated books as J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Roald Dahl’s ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ and ‘Matilda’. We had Cruella de Vil from ‘‘The Hundred and One Dalmatians’ not to mention many Gangsta Grannies and Grandpas from David Williams’ popular books. The children also showed their creativity in the choice of book characters. One child in Year 3 had transformed herself into the Mad Hatter’s tea party table from ‘Alice in Wonderland’ by Lewis Carroll and another had come as a very convincing bookworm! Puck from Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ also turned up.

Each class had the daunting task of selecting the best costumes which were awarded ‘Willy Wonka Golden Ticket’ style book vouchers. All the winners were invited to our Scholastic Book Fair and with great excitement they all exchanged their Golden Tickets for a book of their choice.

The children were also encouraged to participate in the World Book Day campaign of ‘Share a Story’ and they spent much of the day sharing stories with each other in class, in the library and in the playground; with older children reading to the younger ones.

Our week long Book Fair helped us celebrate World Book Day and gave the children an opportunity to get a book using their £1 World Book Day token.

Angela Noronha, Head of School, said “World Book Day is a great opportunity to raise the profile of reading across the whole school community and helps children to engage with books in exciting ways”.
