AUTHOR VISIT

PAMELA BUTCHART

Award-winning Scottish children’s author, Pamela Butchart, came to St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School on Friday 27th September.

Pamela, best known for her books, ‘The Spy who loved School Dinners!’ and ‘My Teacher is a Vampire Rat’, arrived dressed in a fabulous ‘Alice in Wonderland’ style dress and an alien bobble headband. She treated our children to an extremely funny, interactive and energetic presentation about her life as a writer and about the different people she needs to publish a book; the illustrator, the editor, the designer, the printer.

Pamela shared with the children some of the stories from her latest book ‘Icarus was Ridiculous’ based on the Ancient Greek myths explaining in an hilarious way how King Midas had made a very bad decision when he wished for everything he touched to turn to gold. Pamela, who constantly included the children, asked what they would wish for with one child cleverly replying “more wishes”!
The children were mesmerized throughout and inspired by her words that they can achieve their wishes by having “a big imagination, a big heart and a dose of confidence”.
Afterwards, Pamela spent time meeting children and signing books in our school library. She was really impressed with our library remarking that it was a beautiful and inspiring place.

Thank you so much Pamela
.

Thanks to the publisher, Nosy Crow and local bookseller, Pickled Pepper Books

Dahlicious Dress Up

Roald Dahl Day

Friday 13th September 2019

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Highgate, celebrated Roald Dahl Day with a dazzling display of costumes. Every year we celebrate the birthday of the World’s No.1 Story-teller with our children coming to school dressed as their favourite characters from Roald Dahl’s stories. It was a ‘whizzpopper’ celebration with fun quizzes, games and costume prizes.

The children had an opportunity to parade their costumes in a whole-school assembly. Each class had the daunting task of selecting the best costumes which were awarded ‘Willy Wonka Golden Ticket’ style book vouchers. All the winners are invited to our Book Fair next month when they will exchange their Golden Tickets for a book of their choice.

The children showed amazing creativity in both their choice of characters and in hand-making their costumes. We had children coming as Roald Dahl himself and one child even came as the actual book ‘The BFG’!! Of course, we also had a troop of Fantastic Mr Foxes and numerous Mr and Mrs Twits.
