Roald Dahl Dress Up Day

ROALD DAHL DAY

The children at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, Highgate, came to school on Monday 14th September dressed as characters from Roald Dahl stories. We were greeted by a lot of excited children at the school gates eager to show their costumes and join in with the ‘whizzpopper’ quizzes, games and costume prizes.

This annual event to celebrate the birthday of the world-famous storyteller is a fantastic opportunity to encourage an early love of words and reading. It was especially positive to come together to celebrate as a school community after such a long break.

Each class had the difficult task of selecting the best costumes to be awarded a Willy Wonka style “golden ticket” book voucher. This year the children’s creativity in choosing characters and making their own costumes really shone out as along with the array of Fantastic Mr Foxes and Matildas we had a Great Glass Elevator and a Peach!

It is an important day in the school calendar as it inspires our children to share a love of stories.

“We had a truly magical and ‘Dahlicious’ day!”

Monday 14th September DRESS-UP DAY Years 1 - 6

Roald Dahl Day takes place on 13th September every year and marks the anniversary of the birth of the world’s number one storyteller. Roald Dahl wrote 39 books for children and adults, creating many characters such as Charlie Bucket, Matilda Wormwood, the Twits and the BFG.

To celebrate we invite children in Years 1 – 6 to come to school on Monday 14th September dressed as their favourite Roald Dahl character. We will be organising various ‘phizz-whizzing’ activities and there will be a COMPETITION for the best costumes. The winners will each receive a ‘splendiferous’ Roald Dahl book.

So, remember to don your Willy Wonka top hat or your fantastic bushy Mr Fox tail for a Dahlicious Dress-up Day! Don't forget, yellow was Roald Dahl's favourite colour so you can join in the Dahlicious Dress Up Day by wearing anything yellow.

Class Sessions

Roald Dahl Celebrations

As part of our Roald Dahl celebrations during our class sessions for the past two weeks we have been concentrating on his writing.

The children have been listening to extracts from his books being read by celebrities such as Chris O'Dowd reading from 'The Fantastic Mr Fox' and Julian Rhind-Tutt reading from 'James and the Giant Peach'.

We even had an appearance of Mr Fox in our library!!

You can listen to more excerpts of Roald Dahl's books if you follow the link:

We played games where the children made up names for their Roald Dahl character and played quizzes to test their knowledge of the writer and his books.

Did you know that Roald Dahl's favourite composer was Beethoven and his favourite colour was yellow?

It has been a brilliant celebration and the Roald Dahl books have been flying off the shelves!

Lots of Dahlicious reading going on!
