Library News - Digital Books

 Library News

We have an excellent resource in our school library to support our commitment to improving literacy and promoting reading for pleasure.

Our library aims to provide children with a diverse, current and inspiring range of books to support their learning experience. This year our library has earned over £1,500 worth of free books from our successful Scholastic Book Fair, as well as, being the lucky recipient of 500 books gifted to us by the BBC 500 Words Competition.

We are keen to concentrate our resources on providing a well-stocked library for the children to be able to access for school and home learning. With this in mind, we will not be continuing to provide a digital book collection (eBooks). However, our school library catalogue, the Reading Cloud, can be viewed and pupils are encouraged to use this resource to help with research on books and authors and to write reviews on books they have read.

To access the Reading Cloud and to find out more about the library, please go to the News tab on the school website https://st-josephs.islington.sch.uk/. Each child has a username and password which has been either given to them or sent home by their class teacher.

Junior Librarians

Junior Librarians at work!

Our junior librarians have been chosen from children in Year 5 and Year 6.

Since the beginning of our autumn term they have been busy helping to run our school library.

They have many duties such as the following:

·      To keep the library tidy and in correct order

·      To keep book corners around school tidy

·      To help issue and return books

·      To recommend books to other children

·      To help children to find books

This week at lunch times they have been focusing on being reading buddies for children in Year 1 and Year 2. The librarians go and collect the children from their playground, bring them to the library and read them stories.

Our junior librarians, Giancarlo and Alfie from Indigo Class have been holding READING CLOUD Workshops.

They have been demonstrating to children from all year groups how to access and enjoy ebooks and eAudiobooks on our READING CLOUD using chrome books.

They have as a mission to help to get all the children in school to use our great online digital reading resource.

Giancarlo and Alfie have shown fabulous independent learning.

Thank you to all our enthusiastic and creative junior librarians who help to make our library such a special place and to encourage reading for pleasure.

Technology Open Morning

 Technology Open Morning

💻💻💻💻💻💻💻💻

Today we welcomed a group of teachers from Denmark to participate in our school's Technology morning. They visited every class where use of technology to enhance learning was demonstrated.

During a visit to the school library they were shown around our specific reading areas from our Picture Book to our Non-Fiction room and our cosy Book Nook.

Some of our Junior Librarians together with our Digital Leaders demonstrated to our visitors the use of technology to enhance reading experiences.

They explained how we have an online school library catalogue and reading resource for pupils, staff and parents
called the READING CLOUD (Education Software Solutions). They can access this from school and home to help with research, to write reviews, blog about what they are reading and their favourite authors, search for new books and reserve.

eBooks and eAudiobooks are available on our online Reading Cloud. The children can continue their reading experience in the classroom, at home, at weekends and during holidays.

We are keen to promote the pleasure of reading whether it be reading a physical book or an eBook or listening to an eAudiobook.

Technology is important to keeping our children engaged with reading especially when
access to school and libraries is not possible due to illness or holidays.

There is a time and place for all reading formats.

Open Morning for Parents

WELCOME
to our
LIBRARY

As part of our welcome back to school for our existing and new Parents/Carers we held open mornings for each year group.
Presentations on our school and the learning for this year were given by teachers.
The school librarian, Mrs Rooney, gave a short presentation on the school library.

Our library has a digital management system called the Reading Cloud. It is a reading resource that allows pupils, staff and parents to access eBooks and audiobooks. Our digital library has been funded by the GET ISLINGTON READING initiative.

Each child has log-on details which are either given to them in school or sent home by the class teachers.

Following the presentations Parents/Carers were invited to visit the school library.

To access the Reading Cloud and to find out more about the library, please go to the News tab on the school website

READING CLOUD ebooks & AudioBooks

Dear Parent/Carers,

Encouraging Your Child’s Reading for Pleasure:  Our new school OVERDRIVE digital book collection now available on our online READING CLOUD library management system.

Our school is strongly committed to improving literacy and knows the importance of reading for pleasure.  There is good evidence to suggest that young people who read for pleasure daily perform better academically.  We want to encourage children to enjoy reading and to read a wide range of good quality literature.

The Reading Cloud allows pupils, staff and parents to view our school library catalogue online and pupils are encouraged to use this to help with research, to write reviews about books they have read, blog about what they are reading and their favourite authors and search for new books and other library resources.

I am delighted to inform you that the school has now made available a digital book collection on Reading Cloud.  Our subscription to Overdrive Primary eBooks NOW gives us access to a shared collection of over 4,000 eBooks of which approximately 500 are audiobooks. We are grateful to the GET ISLINGTON READING campaign in partnership with The National Literacy Trust, The Reading Agency and Islington Borough Council who have provided the funding for this subscription.

You can access the Reading Cloud via the school website (follow the News tab to Library Blogs) or directly using the following link: http://ilovereadingatstjosephs.blogspot.com/

If you have access to an iPhone, Android phone, or tablet, then you can also download the App called ‘Reading Cloud’ (iMLS Student) to access the library and loan eBooks. Once on the App you will need to find our school using our postcode: N19 5NE.

Teachers will be sending home your child’s username and password. Please check with your child and in school bags.

You will find information on how to use the Reading Cloud and general news about our school library on the Library Blog.

Having the library accessible in this way and having parents engaged with reading, will help to support our commitment to improving literacy standards.

We hope you find the new facility both educational and enjoyable. If you have any questions please contact me at office@st-josephs.islington.sch.uk.

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Rooney

School Librarian

Keep reading over the holidays with the help of our new eBook and audiobook collection. Head to our Reading Cloud and download an eBook today!

Libraries & Winter Mini Reading Challenge

Books and Reading

As you are aware children are not able to use our school library for book borrowing during the Covid-19 public health emergency. We would, therefore, like to give you further support and information to help keep our children reading.

With public libraries also closed it may be challenging to access physical books. Therefore, it is time to turn to eBooks and eAudio. Our local library services nationwide give us FREE access to thousands of titles.

We would encourage every child to join online their local library at this time and use the FREE eBook platforms. To assist please find below the links for our local libraries of Islington, Haringey and Camden.

Islington:
https://capitadiscovery.co.uk/islington/join
Haringey:
https://www.haringey.gov.uk/libraries-sport-and-leisure/haringey-libraries
Camden:
https://www.camden.gov.uk/digital-library

To further support literacy we are encouraging children to join the Reading Agency’s Winter Mini Reading Challenge 2020 which aims to keep children, aged 4-11, reading through the winter holidays. It is particularly important this year to maintain reading skills and learning due to the disruption to education caused by Covid-19.

The Winter Mini Reading Challenge is online. To take part children simply read 3 books or more of their choice and record, rate and review them at www.wintermini.org.uk. Each child is then rewarded with a certificate and virtual badge. The website also features fun activities and competitions as well as book recommendations.

Please join The Winter Mini Challenge now at www.wintermini.org.uk and share with the teachers over the weeks what your children are reading.

Our online school library catalogue and reading resource – the Reading Cloud - can be accessed through the Library Blog via the school website or directly using the following link:

http://ilovereadingatstjosephs.blogspot.com/

Children in Years 3 – 6 have been given their log-on details for the Reading Cloud where they can write reviews and research books and authors.

Our library blog is dedicated to literary news and useful information such as book lists, reading tips and links to online resources, such as the Book Trust (https://www.booktrust.org.uk/) to help support and inspire our children to read.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you require any further information by emailing me at: office@st-josephs.islington.sch.uk.
