Libraries & Winter Mini Reading Challenge

Books and Reading

As you are aware children are not able to use our school library for book borrowing during the Covid-19 public health emergency. We would, therefore, like to give you further support and information to help keep our children reading.

With public libraries also closed it may be challenging to access physical books. Therefore, it is time to turn to eBooks and eAudio. Our local library services nationwide give us FREE access to thousands of titles.

We would encourage every child to join online their local library at this time and use the FREE eBook platforms. To assist please find below the links for our local libraries of Islington, Haringey and Camden.

To further support literacy we are encouraging children to join the Reading Agency’s Winter Mini Reading Challenge 2020 which aims to keep children, aged 4-11, reading through the winter holidays. It is particularly important this year to maintain reading skills and learning due to the disruption to education caused by Covid-19.

The Winter Mini Reading Challenge is online. To take part children simply read 3 books or more of their choice and record, rate and review them at www.wintermini.org.uk. Each child is then rewarded with a certificate and virtual badge. The website also features fun activities and competitions as well as book recommendations.

Please join The Winter Mini Challenge now at www.wintermini.org.uk and share with the teachers over the weeks what your children are reading.

Our online school library catalogue and reading resource – the Reading Cloud - can be accessed through the Library Blog via the school website or directly using the following link:

http://ilovereadingatstjosephs.blogspot.com/

Children in Years 3 – 6 have been given their log-on details for the Reading Cloud where they can write reviews and research books and authors.

Our library blog is dedicated to literary news and useful information such as book lists, reading tips and links to online resources, such as the Book Trust (https://www.booktrust.org.uk/) to help support and inspire our children to read.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you require any further information by emailing me at: office@st-josephs.islington.sch.uk.
