Author Visit - Helen Peters

Author Visit – Helen Peters

Wednesday 12th June

Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, Year 4 & Year 5

What a fantastic and inspirational visit with Helen Peters!

Helen Peters, award-winning author, was in school on Wednesday 12th June to give a presentation on her books and writing to our Years 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

There was great excitement as children and staff gathered in our lower junior assembly hall.

Helen is author of Friends and Traitors, The Secret Hen House Theatre trilogy, and the Jasmine Green animal rescue series. She introduced to the children, ‘A Llama called Lightning’, the sixteenth book in the Jasmine Green series with beautiful illustrations by Ellie Snowdon and ‘Friends and Traitors’, a second world war mystery. Her stories are about adventure, bravery, family and friendship.

Helen spoke in a fun and engaging way about her path to becoming an author. The children were enthralled by the stories from her childhood growing up on an old-fashioned farm in Sussex, surrounded by family, animals and lots of mud. As a child she loved reading and putting on plays. Together with her friends she transformed an old barn into a theatre. All this led to her becoming an English and Drama teacher and eventually becoming a writer.

Helen’s cute photos and illustrations of animals that feature in many of her stories filled the hall with lots of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ from the children.

“It was so interesting and my absolute favourite part was when she talked about the animals and showed us cute pictures”. – Sophia (Diamond Class)

It was also fascinating for the children that Helen explained clearly how a book is made from pen to print. She showed her note books and rough drafts and explained that an editor is just like a teacher who corrects and helps you improve your writing which the children immediately related to.

“I loved how she explained how the books were actually made” Theo (Diamond Class)

It was wonderful that Helen also made the time for the children to ask her questions and gave warm and engaging replies.

To finish off her talk Helen engaged the children in a fun quiz about her writing. There was much laughter and excitement.

This was followed by a book signing in the library for the children who had pre-ordered copies of her books.

We now have signed copies of Helen’s books in our library and they have been flying off the shelves.

Thank you so much Helen for coming into St Josephs and inspiring the next generation of writers.

AUTHOR VISIT

Katie & Kevin Tsang

Tuesday, 19th September

Year 4, Year 5, & Year 6

Katie and Kevin loved our library and book nook.

What a fabulous start to our autumn term!

We were delighted to welcome to St. Joseph’s the wonderful authors, Katie and Kevin Tsang, co-authors of the bestselling, ‘Dragon Realm’ books. St. Joseph’s was their first stop on their tour to promote the first book, ‘Dragon Force’, of their latest action-packed series.

Year 4, Year 5, and Year 6 children gathered in the Upper Junior Hall to listen to a fun and interactive talk given by Katie and Kevin. They began by explaining how they worked to produce their books and shared tips on how to be inclusive when working together, building on ideas.

The children were keen to find out about their new story, ‘Dragon Force’, so Katie and Kevin treated them to lively reading from the beginning of the book. It was so quiet in the hall as both teachers and children were mesmerized by the story.

Then there was a fun and interactive moment where the children, helped by the authors, got to create their own dragon. Katie and Kevin explained how they created characters for each of their dragons giving them each a superpower such as shape-changing or replicating. The children contributed their ideas and together came up with a dragon called Gemma Claus, who had the following features:

Flaming red eyes

Diamante fangs

Green lightning horns

Gem-stone tail

Glowing green wings

Superpower: size-changing

Oh! And likes hot chocolate!!

The children had an opportunity to ask the authors questions at the end of the talk.

Finally, there was a personalized book-signing for the children who had pre-purchased books.

“It was amazing to meet the authors and the story. ‘Dragon Force’, is so exciting that I am already on page 200!!", said Asuadoba (Violet Class).

Thank you to the authors for coming into St Joseph’s to share their books with us and inspire our children. Keep writing!!

Thank you to all who supported this event by purchasing signed copies of the books and to our local bookshop, Pickled Pepper Books.

TRANSITION

Year 6 classes were treated to an engaging workshop with the award-winning author, Sita Brahmachari, to support them as they make the big change of moving to secondary school.

Sita’s workshop introduced her book ‘When Secrets Set Sail’ highlighting the themes of journeys, change and transition. She shared with the children her own experiences of growing up and her journey to becoming an author. She told the children how she was shy at school and only had the confidence later in life to share her writing.

She used the symbols of anchor and sails as metaphors for what connects us to our past, and what propels us into our future encouraging the children to doodle on ‘anchor and sails’ worksheets things that they treasure and emotions they feel that connect them to their history and inheritance.

“Fold all your emotions and experiences into stories”, advised Sita, as she stretched the treasured sari from her past across the classroom with the help of a child.

With Sita’s help the children also completed a Reading Identi-tree noting books on branches of a tree that were important to them and creating a type of character map.

Sita’s book ‘When Secrets Set Sail’ deals with issues of transition and her workshop helped the children think about ways of positively embracing this new beginning.

Sita was given a tour of our school and library. She was impressed not only with our school library but with all our reading corners giving children every opportunity to read.

Sita signed school copies of her books to the delight of the children.

In our school library we have copies of the following books written by Sita:

Red Leaves

Worry Angels

Where the River Runs Gold

Swallow’s Kiss

Thank you to the #GetIslingtonReading program run by The National Literacy Trust for giving us this opportunity.

 Frank Cottrell Boyce

Award-winning author and screenwriter

Friday 10th June

Presentation for Years 3, 4, 5 & 6

Frank admired our lovely children and library.

What an amazing Friday morning our Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 children had with the very inspiring and amusing award-winning author, Frank Cottrell Boyce.

Frank came to visit us to share his latest book ‘Noah’s Gold’ which is packed with mystery, adventure and laughs. Frank enthralled the children with his lively story-telling and readings from his books, Noah’s Gold and Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth.

The children had an opportunity to ask Frank many thoughtful questions.

Khamil (Indigo Class) – “What inspired you to write Noah’s Gold?”

Frank – “The best thing about writing is that it takes you out of yourself and you can explore other places”

Emile (Blue Class) – “Where did you get the idea for Noah’s character?”

Frank – “ Noah is based on me as we both love food.”

Amara (Blue Class) – “Do you make mistakes in your writing?”

Frank – “Yes, but is it fine to make mistakes. Some of the best things in the world come from mistakes like chocolate chip biscuits!!”

Riccardo (Violet Class) – “Why did you want to be an author?”

Frank – “I discovered that I was good at writing at school and realised that words are a superpower that can make people laugh.

Frank’s presentation was brilliantly entertaining and thought provoking.

What a treat!
