GUIDE TO READING

 Reading with your child

Sharing a book with a child is fun.

It can also give children a flying start in life and help them to become lifelong readers.

Here are some handy tips and advice to help you get the most out of reading together.

Remember there is no right or wrong way and it is never too early to start.

  • Set aside a reading time that is good for everyone.
  • Let your child choose a book so that they are more engaged
  • Pick a comfortable reading place in your home
  • Encourage your child to talk about the book by asking them questions and what they think will happen next.
  • Fill your home with reading materials such as magazines, newspapers and books.

The Book Trust is a great source for information about books and reading and they have put together a range of booklets (in 28 languages) full of tips and advice on getting the most out of sharing books with children at every age.

Winter Mini Challenge

The Winter Mini Reading Challenge 2020 – 1st December 2020 – 15th January 2021

 Join The Winter Mini Challenge

Join your Local Library

To support literacy in school we are encouraging children to join the Winter Mini Reading Challenge 2020 which aims to keep children, aged 4-11, reading through the winter holidays. It is particularly important this year to maintain reading skills and learning due to the disruption to education caused by Covid-19.

This year the Winter Mini Reading Challenge is online. To take part children simply read 3 books or more of their choice and record, rate and review them at www.wintermini.org.uk. Each child is then rewarded with a certificate and virtual badge. The website also features fun activities and competitions as well as book recommendations.

With public libraries closed it may be challenging to access physical books. Therefore, it is time to turn to eBooks and eAudio. Our local library services nationwide give us FREE access to thousands of titles.

We would encourage you to assist your children in joining your local library at this time and use the FREE eBook platforms. Please find below links for our local libraries of Islington, Haringey and Camden.
