Technology Open Morning

 Technology Open Morning

💻💻💻💻💻💻💻💻

Today we welcomed a group of teachers from Denmark to participate in our school's Technology morning. They visited every class where use of technology to enhance learning was demonstrated.

During a visit to the school library they were shown around our specific reading areas from our Picture Book to our Non-Fiction room and our cosy Book Nook.

Some of our Junior Librarians together with our Digital Leaders demonstrated to our visitors the use of technology to enhance reading experiences.

They explained how we have an online school library catalogue and reading resource for pupils, staff and parents
called the READING CLOUD (Education Software Solutions). They can access this from school and home to help with research, to write reviews, blog about what they are reading and their favourite authors, search for new books and reserve.

eBooks and eAudiobooks are available on our online Reading Cloud. The children can continue their reading experience in the classroom, at home, at weekends and during holidays.

We are keen to promote the pleasure of reading whether it be reading a physical book or an eBook or listening to an eAudiobook.

Technology is important to keeping our children engaged with reading especially when
access to school and libraries is not possible due to illness or holidays.

There is a time and place for all reading formats.

Comic Art Masterclasses – Year 5

This event is part of the National Literacy Trust and The Reading Agency #GET ISLINGTON READING project.

Our Year 5 children had a very entertaining and productive day in the company of
Kev F Sutherland, Scottish comedian, caricaturist and comic strip creator who has drawn for a variety of publications, including The Beano.

Kev gave two 2-hour sessions teaching the children all about how to draw a comic strip. Indigo class had the morning session and Tanzanite class had the afternoon one.

For everyone who thinks they cannot draw Kev gave a useful and inspiring demonstration of how drawing is just a series of shapes and lines on a page and he had the children drawing confidently in no time.

With the expert help of Kev the children set about creating their very own comic strip. Firstly, they all had to suggest a title and then they all voted and the favourite one was chosen.

"Go Crazy" - Indigo Class

"Dingleberry Town" - Tanzanite Class

The time was spent drawing with Kev sharing lots of tips for making a successful comic strip and lots of fun in-between.

All along Kev made the lively interactive sessions really entertaining and laughter filled the Art room.

He also made a caricature of each child to include in the final comic.

At the end of the day every child was given a copy of the comic strip they had all contributed to making.

Title pages of our comic strip finished by Kev.

The children were delighted and agreed that it had been "so much fun and had taught them an easy way to draw".

Kev had a quick visit to our library and was very impressed with our array of graphic novels.

Thanks Kev!

Kev F. Sutherland is a Scottish comedian, caricaturist, and comic strip creator. He has drawn for a variety of publications, including The Beano.

We are excited to welcome Kev F. Sutherland to our school to deliver his entertaining and educational masterclasses in comic art.

His COMIC ART MASTERCLASSES in schools have proved ridiculously popular.

The classes aim to educate and enthuse children in comic and cartoon art, teaching them all techniques and tricks of the comic artist.  He will be delivering 2 sessions to each of our Year 5 classes and by the end of every session they will have created a brand-new School Comic and drawn caricatures.

World Book Day

St Joseph’s World Book Day and Book Fair
Thursday 2nd March 2023

World Book Day at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School and Nursery was a fabulous celebration. This year we gave each child a wooden spoon to decorate as their favourite book character and asked them to bring in a photo showing them reading in their favourite place such as a comfy chair or in the park.

On the day, children were invited to come into school wearing their favourite pyjamas, onesies or comfy clothes with their photo of them reading in their favourite comfy place, their decorated spoons and, if possible a copy of the book the character was from.

Children came into school with an impressive array of designs for their spoon book characters. It was truly amazing to see such creativity. We spent the day cosying up with books, sharing stories, watching virtual author talks, making bookmarks and covers plus holding a whole-school book quiz.

There was lots of cosy-reading in the library at lunch time.

Our week-long Book Fair helped us to celebrate World Book Day and gave the children an opportunity to use their £1 World Book Day token to get a £1 off a book of their choice at the Fair or to swap it for a World Book Day book.

Children can redeem their £1 book token for one of the brilliant World Book Day £1 books for FREE at a local bookseller. Token redemption is from 16 February – 26 March 2023.

Happy World Book Day!
