World Book Day

St Joseph’s Primary School Celebrates World Book Day with Creative Dress-Up

In a celebration of literacy and creativity, St Joseph’s Primary School marked World Book Day with children invited to come to school dressed as a ‘word’; bringing language to life in a vibrant and imaginative way.

The school was alive with children transformed into colourful walking embodiments of words, such as triumphant, iridescent, fatigued, spotty and storm, to name but a few. From "sparkling" princesses to "enchanting" wizards, the costumes were as diverse as the words they represented. All this sparked curiosity, conversation and excitement throughout the school.

Children from Emerald Class dressed up in costumes that represent the words: 'retro', 'spotty', 'soldier', 'wizard', 'dazzle' and 'storm'.

In the morning, a ‘reading swap’ was organised so that children in KS2 joined our children in KS1, Nursery and Reception to share a beautiful moment reading with them.

St Joseph’s also hosted a Scholastic Book Fair giving the children an opportunity to use their World Book Day £1 book token to either get a £1 off a book of their choice or swap it for one of the especially published World Book Day books.

As the day ended, children gathered for a special assembly where they joined in with a quiz and shared their creative alternative book covers. Prizes of book vouchers for the book fair were awarded to the winners of the best book covers. It was a fitting conclusion to a day filled with creativity, laughter, and a shared love of books.

Cillian - Amethyst Class - with winning book cover design.

Rionagh - Sapphire Class - with winning book cover design.

The children all agreed that they had the most magical, fun day sharing their favourite books.

Executive Headteacher, Miss Clare McFlynn, expressed her delight at the creativity displayed by the children, stating, "World Book Day is a wonderful opportunity for our children to celebrate the joy of reading and language.”.

World Book Day

St Joseph’s Primary School Celebrates World Book Day with Creative Dress-Up

In a celebration of literacy and imagination, St Joseph’s Primary School (Outstanding 2023 Ofsted Rating) marked World Book Day with a unique twist this year. Instead of donning the costumes of their favourite characters, children embraced the power of words by dressing up as literary terms, bringing language to life in vibrant and imaginative ways.

The halls of St Joseph’s were alive with children transformed into colourful walking embodiments of words, such as quirky, affluent, fragile, somnolent and float, to name but a few. From "sparkling" fairies to "mischievous" foxes, the costumes were as diverse as the words they represented. All this sparked curiosity, conversation and excitement throughout the school with Billy (Year 3), who came as a “playful” pup, saying it was “the most incredible World Book Day ever”.

Executive Headteacher, Miss Clare Mcflynn, expressed her delight at the creativity displayed by the children, stating, "World Book Day is a wonderful opportunity for our children to celebrate the joy of reading and language. It was a truly inspiring day”.

St Joseph’s also hosted a Scholastic Book Fair giving the children an opportunity to use their World Book Day £1 book token to either get a £1 off a book of their choice or swap it for one of the especially published World Book Day books.

Isaac (Orange Class) lucky winner of quiz at the book fair.

Tahlia (Diamond Class) lucky winner of book cover competition.

Cain (Indigo Class) lucky winner of quiz..

As the day ended, children gathered for a special assembly where they joined in with a quiz and shared their creative alternative book covers. Prizes of book vouchers for the book fair were awarded to the winners of the quiz. It was a fitting conclusion to a day filled with creativity, laughter, and a shared love of books.

World Book Day

St Joseph’s World Book Day and Book Fair
Thursday 2nd March 2023

World Book Day at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School and Nursery was a fabulous celebration. This year we gave each child a wooden spoon to decorate as their favourite book character and asked them to bring in a photo showing them reading in their favourite place such as a comfy chair or in the park.

On the day, children were invited to come into school wearing their favourite pyjamas, onesies or comfy clothes with their photo of them reading in their favourite comfy place, their decorated spoons and, if possible a copy of the book the character was from.

Children came into school with an impressive array of designs for their spoon book characters. It was truly amazing to see such creativity. We spent the day cosying up with books, sharing stories, watching virtual author talks, making bookmarks and covers plus holding a whole-school book quiz.

There was lots of cosy-reading in the library at lunch time.

Our week-long Book Fair helped us to celebrate World Book Day and gave the children an opportunity to use their £1 World Book Day token to get a £1 off a book of their choice at the Fair or to swap it for a World Book Day book.

Children can redeem their £1 book token for one of the brilliant World Book Day £1 books for FREE at a local bookseller. Token redemption is from 16 February – 26 March 2023.

Happy World Book Day!
