SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

In order to support literacy in school every year we encourage our children to join ‘The Summer Reading Challenge’. The Challenge is a nationwide initiative run by the Reading Agency at your local libraries. It aims to encourage children aged 4-11 to include reading as part of their summer holiday activities. It runs from July until mid-September.

To launch the Summer Reading Challenge, we invited into school an Islington Librarian to talk to the children about how to join in. It is as simple as going to your local library anywhere in the UK. To find your local library go to https://www.gov.uk/local-library-services.

local author of Polish heritage, Ewa Jozefkowicz also joined our assemblies to inspire our children to keep reading over the holidays. Ewa told the children about how she started writing when she was very young like them and grew up surrounded by books as her father owned a bookshop.

She talked about her book ‘The Cooking Club Detectives’ and the ingredients of a good mystery story.

It was lovely to see the children’s faces light up when getting their books signed by Ewa. Thank you for coming into school and donating your books to our school library. I am sure they will not be on our shelves for long!!

The Summer Reading Challenge 2022

In order to support literacy in school we are delighted to inform you that we have organised school assemblies to launch a special science-themed Summer Reading Challenge, which aims to encourage children, aged 4-11 to include reading as part of their summer holiday activities.

We have invited an Islington librarian to come into school to tell the children all about this nationwide initiative run by The Reading Agency. Local author of Polish heritage, Ewa Jozefkowicz, will also be joining us to inspire our children to read over the summer. She will be sharing her book ‘The Cooking Club Detectives’, (8+) which celebrates the importance of community, family and friends - it includes recipes and has a fascinating mystery at its heart. Ewa will be talking about the ingredients of a good mystery story and how to create believable characters. Signed copies with a dedicated message for each child will be available for purchase on ParentPay at the discounted price of £5.

The Summer Reading Challenge not only helps maintain and even improve reading levels but promotes reading as a fun activity. It starts on Saturday 9th July at your local library.

Islington Council Visit

Islington Council – Visit to our Library

Wednesday 15th June

We were delighted to welcome Sarah Callaghan Director of Learning and Culture and Councillor Valerie Bossman-Quarshie  to visit our school library.

They came at lunchtime and were taken on a guided tour by some of our

junior librarians from Years 5 & 6.

Our Library is housed in a separate building on the school site. There is a room devoted to foundation stage picture books where class sessions are hosted daily, a book nook and an early chapter book area for KS1. Upstairs we have a room for fiction books and another for non-fiction. We have a reading area outside with benches and sun umbrellas for use in the spring and summer months.

Our visitors spent time learning about our library and how our children enjoy using this resource.

Junior librarian, Enitan, Tanzanite Class, showed our visitors around the fiction room pointing out the different genres of books we have.

“My favourite books are by the author, J.R.R. Tolkien”, said Enitan.

We have a well-stocked library with a wide range of titles that cover fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, folktales, etc. We have graphic novels, comics, manga, magazines, multi-lingual books, dyslexia friendly books, and now ebooks and audiobooks. Diversity and inclusion are celebrated across our provision.

Junior librarian, Cosima, Indigo Class, talked to our visitors about all her favourite literary events that are organised throughout the year.

“Frank Cottrell Boyce came last week to visit and he was so funny and read a bit of his book ‘Noah’s Gold’. It was great!”, said Cosima.

Our visitors seemed delighted with our children and library and left us feeling very positive about our Library and its role in encouraging our children be happy and confident readers for pleasure, well-being and learning.

Author Visit

 Frank Cottrell Boyce

Award-winning author and screenwriter

Friday 10th June

Presentation for Years 3, 4, 5 & 6

Frank admired our lovely children and library.

What an amazing Friday morning our Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 children had with the very inspiring and amusing award-winning author, Frank Cottrell Boyce.

Frank came to visit us to share his latest book ‘Noah’s Gold’ which is packed with mystery, adventure and laughs. Frank enthralled the children with his lively story-telling and readings from his books, Noah’s Gold and Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth.

The children had an opportunity to ask Frank many thoughtful questions.

Khamil (Indigo Class) – “What inspired you to write Noah’s Gold?”

Frank – “The best thing about writing is that it takes you out of yourself and you can explore other places”

Emile (Blue Class) – “Where did you get the idea for Noah’s character?”

Frank – “ Noah is based on me as we both love food.”

Amara (Blue Class) – “Do you make mistakes in your writing?”

Frank – “Yes, but is it fine to make mistakes. Some of the best things in the world come from mistakes like chocolate chip biscuits!!”

Riccardo (Violet Class) – “Why did you want to be an author?”

Frank – “I discovered that I was good at writing at school and realised that words are a superpower that can make people laugh.

Frank’s presentation was brilliantly entertaining and thought provoking.

What a treat!
