Competition – BBC 500 Words
Many of our children
submitted stories for the BBC 500 Words competition. Liza from Tanzanite Class submitted
a story which was chosen for a special prize and she had the honour of visiting
Buckingham Palace as part of the celebrations. St Joseph’s school was chosen in
a prize draw to receive 500 books and an art mural for our Upper KS2 hall.

The competition was launched in 2011 to encourage children of all abilities to use their creativity and imagination to write a story they would love to read. Every story entered into the competition is sent to Oxford University Press who use the stories to help understand the language children are using and what they are interested in to ultimately improve the way English is taught in schools.

St Joseph’s Primary School Celebrates World Book Day with Creative Dress-Up
In a celebration of literacy and imagination, St Joseph’s
Primary School (Outstanding 2023 Ofsted Rating)
marked World Book Day with a unique twist this year. Instead of donning the
costumes of their favourite characters, children embraced the power of words by
dressing up as literary terms, bringing language to life in vibrant and
imaginative ways.
The halls of St Joseph’s were alive with children transformed
into colourful walking embodiments of words, such as quirky, affluent, fragile,
somnolent and float, to name but a few. From "sparkling" fairies to
"mischievous" foxes, the costumes were as diverse as the words they
represented. All this sparked curiosity, conversation and excitement throughout
the school with Billy (Year 3), who came as a “playful” pup, saying it was “the
most incredible World Book Day ever”.
Executive Headteacher, Miss Clare Mcflynn, expressed her delight
at the creativity displayed by the children, stating, "World Book Day is a
wonderful opportunity for our children to celebrate the joy of reading and
language. It was a truly inspiring day”.
St Joseph’s also hosted a Scholastic Book Fair giving the
children an opportunity to use their World Book Day £1 book token to either get
a £1 off a book of their choice or swap it for one of the especially published
World Book Day books.
