Winter Reading Challenge - Islington Libraries

WINTER READING CHALLENGE

This week we have welcomed into school our local Islington Librarian, Raksha Agheda.

White Class

Raksha dropped into the assemblies for our Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 and visited Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 in class.  She came to talk to the children about the importance of joining the local library.

Assembly

It is FREE and you can join from birth!

She surprised the children by telling them that the youngest person that she helped to join the library was only 6 days old!!

Orange Class

Raksha was delighted to find out that many of our children are already members of their local library and she recognized some of our children as they often go to Archway library.

Diamond Class

As the mascot for the Winter Reading Challenge is a penguin

she entertained the children reading from a range of books with stories about penguins.

Reading to Pearl Class

The children had an opportunity to ask her questions about the library and how it works and she gave out lots of stickers.

Once you join the library then you can join the Winter Reading Challenge as run by Islington Libraries. This is an initiative to keep our children engaged with reading over the winter holidays and beyond.

You need to read books from the library to be able to join the Winter Reading Challenge.

Step 1: Join your local library - www.islington.gov.uk/libraries

Step 2: Join the Winter Reading Challenge

Step 3: Borrow books

Step 4: Read 4 books

Step 5: Get awarded a certificate.

And it is FREE!

Go along to the library, join, borrow books and find out about all the other fun activities that are on.

Thank you Raksha for coming into school.

We hope you meet lots of St Joseph’s children in the library.

GET ISLINGTON READING

NEW BOOKS

Diverse and Inclusive Books
&
Language Books

We have just received a delivery of new books to enhance our
growing stock of books that support our commitment to being an inclusive school.

It is important that every child should be able to see themselves in the books that they read.

We have 'Kiki Kalira Breaks a Kingdom, a joyful adventure inspired by Hindu legends, 'What Lexie Did' featuring the escapades of a London-based Greek-Cyriot family,  'Anisha, Accidental Detective' and 'Hair Love' with a BAME main character.

We also have books with neurodivergent characters such as 'Can You See Me? and ' Pablo and the Noisy Party' whose main character has autism or 'Double Felix', a story that deals with living with OCD. We also have books in which there are characters with various medical conditions such as 'The Extraordinary Colours of Auden Dare' which deals with colour-blindness.

Our language book corner is growing with books in a wide-range of world languages such as
Chinese, Ukrainian, Hindu, German and Polish. Many of these books are dual-language and are aimed at all age and reading levels.
