Islington librarian |
To support literacy over the holiday period, we welcomed a librarian
from Islington Library Service to come into school to encourage our children to
join their local library and the Winter Reading Challenge.
There are two challenges; the Winter
Reading Challenge run by Islington libraries and the Winter Mini Challenge run by The Reading Agency. The challenges aim to encourage children to continue reading over
the winter holidays.
Taking part in the Winter Reading Challenge is simple and free. Children need to read 4 books from their library between 1st December 2022 and 28th February 2022. There are certificates for all those who complete the challenge as well as a chance to win a special prize!
For more information on the Winter
Reading Challenge, and more activities taking place in Islington Libraries,
please visit www.islington.gov.uk/libraries.
Taking
part in the Winter Mini Challenge is
free and online. Visit the dedicated children’s website, www.wintermini.org.uk, and gain rewards for reading and reviewing books!
If you are not already a member of your local library visit https://www.gov.uk/local-library-services to find
the library nearest to you. Join today and start borrowing FREE books, eBooks
and eAudiobooks.
WINTER READING CHALLENGE
This week
we have welcomed into school our local Islington Librarian, Raksha Agheda.
Raksha dropped into the assemblies for our Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 and visited Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 in class. She came to talk to the children about the importance of joining the local library.
Assembly |
It is FREE
and you can join from birth!
She surprised the children by telling them that the youngest person that she helped to join the library was only 6 days old!!
Orange Class |
Raksha was delighted to find out that many of our children are already members of their local library and she recognized some of our children as they often go to Archway library.
As the mascot for the Winter Reading Challenge is a penguin
she entertained the children reading from a range of books with stories about penguins.
The children had an opportunity to ask her questions about the library and how it works and she gave out lots of stickers.
Once you join the library then you can join the Winter Reading Challenge as run by Islington Libraries. This is an initiative to keep our children engaged with reading over the winter holidays and beyond.
You need to read books from the library to be able to join the Winter Reading Challenge.
Step 1: Join your local library - www.islington.gov.uk/libraries
Step 2:
Join the Winter Reading Challenge
Step 3:
Borrow books
Step 4:
Read 4 books
Step 5: Get awarded a certificate.
And it is FREE!
Go along to the library, join, borrow books and find out about all the other fun activities that are on.
Thank you Raksha for coming into school.
We hope you meet lots of St Joseph’s children in the library.
